16-Bit DAC Targets High Performance Systems

June 1, 2001

Targeting high performance systems found in industrial process control, data acquisition and portable instrumentation, the DAC8531 16-bit DAC features miniature package size and low power operation. The D/A converter's small footprint, wide supply voltage and low power consumption (250 µA at 5V) make it ideal for portable battery-operated products. It also features a power-down mode that reduces current consumption to 1 µA (max.). The DAC8531 is optimized for closed-loop feedback systems requiring monotonicity and a fast host control interface. A power-on-reset circuit ensures that the DAC output powers-up at zero volts and remains there until a valid write takes place. An on-chip precision output amplifier allows rail-to-rail output performance. The device uses a three-wire serial interface that operates at clock rates up to 30 MHz and is compatible with standard SPI, QSPI and Microwire interfaces, as well as the company's TMS320 DSPs. The DAC requires a 2.7V to 5.5V supply, guarantees 16-bit monotonic performance, has 10-µs settling time, and is priced at $3.75 each/1,000.
