Fabricated on 0.7-µm BiCMOS and 0.18-µm CMOS technologies, respectively, the TDA7515 analog front end and TDA7580 digital AM/FM IF sampling processor ICs form a chipset that is capable of directly digitizing 10.7-MHz intermediate frequencies (IFs). Direct digitization at the IF is said to make the design more flexible and to allow the implementation of complex equalization techniques that reduce multi-path reception effects introduced by adjacent channels in weak-signal conditions. Based on unique software algorithms, the chipset also creates a path towards dual standard IBOC and FM receivers, whereby a single DSP will have software to handle both. The TDA7515 and TDA7580 are available in 44- and 64-lead TQFPs, respectively, priced at $7.50 each/1,000. STMICROELECTRONICS INC., Lexington, MA. (781) 861-2650.
