DSP Developer's Kit Smartens Up Power Management For Switchers

A new development kit gives designers of switch-mode power supplies the means for quickly implementing smart, versatile power management for their new switchers. The new kit, an industry first, employs digital signal processing technology to achieve better switcher control and performance and to add impressive new features to the supplies. Geared especially for designers of supplies that go into equipment such as network servers, uninterruptible power supplies, and high-power rectifiers (>300W), the TDPS1000EVM developer's kit employs the company's TMS320C2000 DSPs to launch power management modules that, in addition to letting designers meet transient performance, load regulation and power factor correction goals, also provides them with a fully software configurable platform. With the platform, not only can switcher operation be tightly controlled, but its performance can be enhanced through the addition of features such as intelligent fault management, digital current sharing, and active in-rush control. And developers can adapt a power management design across multiple applications by simply changing the DSP's software to match the appropriate power hardware. The kit, priced at $3,995, includes all of the hardware, software and tools needed to begin development of digital power management supplies. And the DSPs are software code-compatible using eXpressDSP software and development tools. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924.
