The NCP4330, a post regulation, dual n-channel MOSFET driver, promises to improve efficiency in forward converters commonly found in ATX and switch-mode power supplies (SMPS). Providing drive outputs for series and freewheeling synchronous FETs, the device is said to deliver higher efficiencies than silicon rectifiers. It derives 3.3V, or other outputs, from the 5V power train without the need for additional windings or terminals on the power transformer. The secondary ac signal directly feeds the driver to minimize power dissipation and reduce parts counts. Available in an SOIC-8package, price is $0.90 each/1,000. ON SEMICONDUCTOR, Phoenix, AZ.
