Heralded as a major technical milestone, the company has demonstrated a fully integrated, silicon-based, multi-cell stack that functions as the core engine of a fuel cell. Compared to similar technologies, the device's architecture is expected to set a new standard by scaling to higher power densities and improving operating efficiencies, leading to smaller physical form factors. Still in the development stage, a silicon-based, direct-methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is capable of power density levels exceeding 80 mW/cm2 at room temperature. This power level was also attained with a stack that has been reduced in size by more than 70% as compared to the company's first stack prototype.
