CODEC Boosts Audio Quality In Digital Cameras

The WM8941 mono CODEC integrates a video buffer and speaker driver to enhance the performance of digital still and video cameras. It employs four programmable notch filters to boost the quality of audio recording while the video buffer provides direct connectivity to a television. Available in a 4 mm x 4 mm package, the device fits inside the smallest of digital cameras. In terms of audio quality, the chip features a wind filter and places the programmable notch filters in the ADC path, enabling tuning to suppress narrowband noise including motor and mechanical noise. The current-mode video buffer promotes a seamless transition from a video DAC output to a TV input and provides a programmable gain of 0 dB or 6 dB. The WM8941 operates from a 2.5V to 3.6V source and the digital supplies can operate as low as 1.71V. Sections of the chip can also be powered down via software control. Sampling now, price is $1.79 each/10,000. WOLFSON MICROELECTRONICS PLC, San Diego, CA. (858) 676-5090.
