Microcontroller Makes Quick Work Of Network Security Chores

The MPC8555 PowerQUICC III with integrated security is designed for VPN routers and integrated access devices. The dual-processor chip is based on an e500 core and a RISC-based Communications Processor Module (CPM). The security engine handles DES, 3DES, MD-5, SHA-1, AES, ARC-4, and public key encryption algorithms. The chip also has a DDR SDRAM controller, dual Gigabit Ethernet controllers, a four-channel DMA controller, dual asynchronous receiver/transmitters (DUARTs), and a 64-bit PCI controller than can also serve as two 32-bit PCI ports. The MP8555 comes in a 783-pin plastic ball-grid-array (PBGA) package. Pricing starts at $112.
