Claiming a 50 times greater life expectancy than traditional optical encoders, the EMS22 non-contacting magnetic encoders are suitable for use in environments where extreme temperatures and harsh conditions are the norm. The components employ a Hall effect, application-specific standard product from austriamicrosystems that produces four waveforms: quadrature, direction/step, absolute, and PWM. A chip-select option allows interrogation of each encoder individually by the microprocessor. Operating in temperatures from -40°C to +125°C, the components operate with either a 5 or 3.3 Vdc supply voltage and deliver speeds up to 10,000 rpm. They are available in three mechanical configurations: single or dual ball bearing bushing mount, and dual ball bearing servo mount. Depending on options, prices range from $19 to $26 each/1,000.
