Designers of MIPS-based embedded systems no longer need to utilize clock generators targeted for other platforms like the PowerPC. Another option is PMC-Sierra's CM5470 clock generator for MIPS processors. This chip generates multiple clocks from a single 14.318-MHz crystal. These include three CPU clocks at one of eight output frequencies; six SSTL2 clock pairs suitable for DDR or SDRAM; four PCI clocks selectable for 33- or 66-MHz operation along with a USB clock selectable for 12, 30, or 48 MHz; and a 25-MHz clock suitable for LAN or S-ATA reference. The chip comes in a 56-pin TSSOP package. Pricing starts at $1.75.
