Samsung Electronics Inc. is introducing a comprehensive family of HEDGE (HSDPA/EDGE) mobile handsets that will employ the Infineon XMM 6080 HSDPA Platform. The Infineon platform includes the HSDPA/EDGE baseband, power management, single-chip 3.5G rf transceiver, and is complemented by the company’s protocol stack for HEDGE phones.

This state-of-the-art solution allows customers to reduce the component count, footprint, complexity, and cost of their designs, according to Infineon. The company also noted that the launch underlines the global maturity of its in-house protocol stack. Using the XMM 6080 platform will enable Samsung to introduce a wide range of HEDGE phones while reusing the same core architecture.

Infineon has already started volume shipments of its platform. Samsung is scheduled to begin shipping its HEDGE phones this quarter.
