Tools Tackle New Processors

Linux and Windows CE spread out to more processors with new tool releases, as Microsoft's Windows CE now supports MIPS Technologies' 550-MHz MIPS32 24K family of cores.

The cores target connected and small-footprint devices, including multimedia consumer electronics, set-top boxes (STBs), gateways, and voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) phones. Windows CE Platform Building addresses these applications with preconfigured platforms. The Windows CE toolset is priced at $995 per developer. A downloadable eval version is available.

On the Linux front, Microcross' latest version of its Visual GNU X-Tools set is based on Slickedit's Visual Slickedit and the GNU X-Tools. This is an Eclipse-based integrated development environment with the Slickedit editor. GNU X-Tools starts with the GNU tools, such as the GNU C/C++ cross compiler and debugger, plus an instruction set simulator. Project wizards assist in system configuration for supported platforms. These include ARM, MIPS32, PowerPC, and XScale processors, along with the new additions of Renesas SuperH (SH1, SH2, SH3, and SH4) and NEC V85x chips.

The toolset supports the FSMLabs real-time RTLinux operating system, the RTEMS open-source embedded operating system, and American Arium's JTAG debugger. Pricing for Visual GNU X-Tools starts at $999 per developer. Support costs $1000 per project per year.
