Wi-Fi Shield Fast Tracks IoT Connectivity

Sept. 19, 2014
The Wi-Fi Shield 101, a joint effort from Arduino and Atmel, enables rapid prototyping of Internet of Things (IoT) applications.

Ahead of New York’s Maker Faire, Arduino and Atmel announced the launch of the Wi-Fi Shield 101, which enables the rapid prototyping of Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications on the Arduino platform. The shield connects to any modern Arduino R3 board. By delivering high-performance Wi-Fi connectivity, it ensures greater security when connecting to most any IoT app, from consumer goods to wearables to robotics.

The cost-effective solution, aimed at design engineers, manufacturers, and educators, is based on the WINC1500 802.11 b/g/n network controller. It features an integrated TCP/IP stack, TLS security, and SoftAP for seamless provisioning. The shield leverages an Atmel authentication security device that can be used for keys, passwords, or secret data.

Wi-Fi Shield 101 connects to a board via long wire-wrap headers that extend through the shield, keeping the pin layout intact and allowing for other shields to be stacked on top. In addition, with its open-source Wi-Fi library, users can write sketches that connect to the Internet.
