The APM 821xx processors, a family of single-core system-on-a-chip (SoC) devices, allegedly enable new levels of performance for NAS systems and media servers at lower costs and power consumption. The devices deliver speeds up to 1 GHz and are capable of 2,000 DMIPS of compute performance, enabling storage platforms that deliver more than 16 simultaneous streams of HD video. Integrated features include a TCP/IP offload engine, RAID 5 acceleration, a128-bit bus architecture with integrated PCI-Express, plus SATA, Gigabit Ethernet, and USB 2.0 OTG interfaces. Power dissipation is typically less than 3.5W in operational settings and less than 0.6W in standby situations. Available in 18 mm x 18 mm, 345-ball FBGAs, limited sample quantities of the APM821xx family are available at less than $20 each/10,000. APPLIED MICRO CIRCUITS CORP., San Jose, CA. (800) 935-2622.
