With the introduction of the world’s smallest M2M cellular module, Telit Wireless Solutions is changing the wireless game for M2M application developers seeking to leverage the ubiquity of cellular networks. Device size is no longer a concern thanks to Telit’s new GE865-QUAD embedded GSM/GPRS cellular module.

Approximately the size of a US postage stamp, the GE865-QUAD boasts an extremely compact form factor (22 by 22 by 3 mm), optimized power consumption, and quad-band technology that enable devices to send data transmissions over any global GSM network (see Fig. 1). Supporting RUN AT Command capability and Over-the-Air firmware updates by means of Premium FOTA Management, the GE865-QUAD allows extended, remote control and maintenance of the module without additional software on the application side. The module is also reinforced for use in extended temperature ranges, from –40°C to 85°C.

Though practical for any M2M application, Telit’s GE865-QUAD module is ideally suited to those in which size and energy consumption are vital to adoption—namely, consumer electronics.

As cellular emerges as the central communications medium for tracking and networking applications, a key challenge facing product designers and engineers is embedding technology that leverages cellular networks into small, consumer-friendly frames. After all, who wants to attach a locator device the size of a Christmas ornament to a key ring or the collar of a pet to ensure it never gets lost?

Reducing the mass of the embedded cellular component brings the overall tracking device down to an acceptable size, making it practical for everyday use. And not only does the GE865-QUAD radically decrease the dimensions of potential products, making wholly new consumer applications feasible, it also enables integrators to take full advantage of additional space made available in current applications (see Fig. 2). Whether adding complimentary wireless technologies, integrating storage, or incorporating battery backup, Telit’s GE865-QUAD grants engineers the autonomy to introduce a host of new features into existing product designs.

According to Telit, the GE865-QUAD effectively removes size constraints from the cellular networking equation, allowing anyone to connect to any device over any distance. With this breakthrough, Telit invites developers to imagine the limitless connectivity made possible by a cellular module this small and unlock the wireless potential of their applications.
