electronica 2006 UPDATE: 15.11.2006Avago Technologies Announces Industry's Smallest Half-Watt High-Brightness LEDs for Automotive Applications

Nov. 15, 2006
Compact red-orange and amber Envisium Power PLCC-4 surface-mount LEDs provide new flexibility in automotive exterior lighting design.

Munich, Germany
Avago Technologies today introduced the industry's first Half-Watt (0.5-W) high-brightness red-orange and amber light-emitting diodes (LED) in an automotive-industry-standard PLCC-4 surface-mount (SMT) package. This new series of 0.5-W Power LEDs feature the industry's smallest package size and are optimized for long operating life under severe environmental conditions making them ideal for automotive exterior lighting applications. Avago is a leading supplier of innovative semiconductor solutions for advanced communications, industrial and commercial applications.

Avago's 0.5-W ASMC-QxB2-Txxx series of SMT LEDs are the latest addition to its family of Envisium Mid-Power LEDs. The target automotive applications for these new LEDs include rear combination lamps, center high-mounted stop lights (CHSML), tail lights, brake lights, side mirror turn-signal repeaters, and marker lamps for trucks and trailers. The high brightness output per LED and small package footprint (3.2 L by 2.8 W by 1.9 H mm) of the 0.5-W Envisium series provide the automotive lighting designer with greater flexibility in designing the size, shape and appearance of lighting assemblies.

In addition to the combination of high brightness, long life and compact size, Avago's 0.5-W Envisium Power PLCC-4 series provide two significant advantages in the automotive production environment: They can be easily soldered using conventional surface mount techniques to minimize production costs, and the package is qualified to a Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC) moisture sensitive level (MSL) rating of 2A. For manufacturers, this rating means that the 0.5-W Power PLCC-4 LEDs can be kept in the open air (30°C, 60 percent relative humidity) for up to four weeks after being removed from its sealed package without the need to remove absorbed moisture.

Features
Avago's ASMC-QHB2-TCD0E (red-orange) and ASMC-QAB2-TAC0E (amber) Envisium LEDs feature typical luminous flux of 6.6 lumens and 9.3 lumens, respectively, at 150 mA drive currents. Other features include:

  • High optical efficiency: 35 lm/W typical for red-orange, 20 lm/W typical for amber
  • Wide 120 degree viewing angle
  • Low thermal resistance: 60 C/W junction to pin
  • Standard PLCC-4 four-pin, leaded-chip carrier is a form and fit replacement for industry standard automotive PLCC-4 LEDs from other manufacturers
  • Available in 12-mm tape on 8-in. (180-mm) diameter reels for automated assembly
  • Electrostatic discharge (ESD): able to withstand voltage up to 2 kV per JESD22-A114-B
  • Operating temperature range: -40°C to +100°C

U.S. Pricing and Availability
Avago's amber and red-orange Envisium 0.5-W Power PLCC-4 LEDs are priced from $0.23 to $0.29 each depending on quantity. Samples and production quantities are available now through Avago's direct sales channel and worldwide distribution partners.

Avago will demonstrate its new products at booth #243 located in Hall A4 at electronica this week in Munich from Nov. 14-17, 2006.
