With an eye on next generation, ultra-thin PDAs and cell phones, the HSDL-3208 serial infrared transceiver in a 1.6-mm high package debuts as the industry’s smallest such device. Measuring just 7 mm x 2.8 mm, it integrates all the desired characteristics for slim portable information appliances, such as 2.5G and 3G wireless handsets and e-wallets. The transceiver features an extended link distance up to 50 cm, exceeding the IrDA’s low-power link specification of 20 cm to 30 cm. Shutdown current is 1 nA and temperature performance is guaranteed at a supply voltage ranging from 2.7 V to 3.6 V over a temperature range of -25°C to 85°C. Other reported features include solid EMI performance without a shield and LED stuck-high protection to eliminate the need for shutting down and resetting the host.
