Enhancing the V850ES family of 32-bit RISC microcontrollers, the V850ES/PM1 (partnumber uPD703228GC-8EU) integrates a wide range of features and peripheral functions that make it suitable for use in power-measurement instruments. Unlike the more common 10-bit converters found in similar MCUs, the V850ES/PM1 controller employs a six-channel/12-input, delta-sigma A/D converter with a 16-bit resolution. An integrated reference voltage generator and reference voltage output pin are said to allow the controller and converter to operate in a single-chip configuration, which lowers component count. The device consumes 2.8 mW per 1 MIPS and exhibits a SNR of 76 dB. To accelerate data access and accommodate connection to external SRAM and flash memory, the MCU uses a separate bus configuration to support access speeds up to 10 MHz on an external bus. With 128 KB of mask ROM and 10 KB of RAM, the V850ES/PM1 is available in a 100-pin LQFP with a starting price of $10 each/10,000. NEC ELECTRONICS AMERICA INC., Santa Clara, CA. (408) 588-6000.
