The latest PIC flash microcontrollers are the first family members to integrate full-speed USB 2.0 connectivity with an operating frequency of 48 MHz, resulting in data-transfer rates up to 12 Mb/s. Depending on the device, they feature either 24 KB or 34 KB of self-programmable, enhanced flash memory, which allows field upgrades via the USB port. Other features include 2 KB of RAM, 1 KB of which can be a dedicated USB buffer, 256 bytes of EEPROM, EUSART for RS-232/485 and LIN serial interfaces, I2C and SPI interfaces, 10-bit a/d converter, two analog comparators, a capture/compare/PWM module with16-bit capture and resolution, an enhanced capture/compare/PWM module with dead-time control and fault-protection inputs, and four timers. Development support is via the MP-USB Wizard 2.0, a GUI-based Windows application that guides users through the creation of descriptor tables, available for free via download from the company’s web site. Prices for the PIC18F2455, PIC18F2550, PIC18F4455, and PIC18F4550 are $4.75, $5.06, $5.14, and $5.82 each/10,000, respectively. MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY INC., Chandler, AZ. (888) 628-6247.
