Emerging as the first signal-chain-on-chip (SCoC) microcontrollers, the MSP430F42x0 targets portable sensing and measurement applications requiring a high level of precision. The devices integrate peripherals such as a 16-bit sigma delta a/d converter, 12-bit d/a converter, up to 32 KB of flash memory, and a LCD driver with an internal charge pump. The 16-bit a/d converter has five differential input channels, delivers up to 8 ksamples/s, and specifies a typical signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SINAD) of 84 dB. It also integrates a programmable gain amplifier, 1.2V reference, and an input buffer. Other MCU features include a real-time clock standby current of 1.1 µA, active current of 300 µA, and a 16-bit RISC CPU. Price is $2.95 each/10,000. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX.
