Compliant with the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), a new powdered-iron-based receiving coil is expressly targeted at the wireless charging of 5-V portable electronics. The IWAS-3827EC-50, developed by Vishay Intertechnology, offers high permeability shielding along with greater than 70% efficiency for Rx applications to 10 W. It’s also 33% smaller than the standard Rx coil, measuring 38 by 27 mm. The high-saturation powdered iron isn’t affected by permanent locating magnets, and the device shields sensitive components or batteries from charging flux. Because its magnetic saturation is 50% at 4000 Gauss, the coil can become a viable alternative for ferrite-based solutions that saturate in the presence of a strong magnetic field. Other features include 10.7-µH inductance at 200 kHz with a ±5% inductance tolerance, 183-mΩ direct current resistance at +25°C, and Q of 30 typical at 200 kHz. Lead length runs 50 mm and tinned length is 10 mm.
