50-V Synchronous Buck Converter Delivers 93% Efficiency

Oct. 8, 2008
Linear Technology's LTC3632 4.5- to 50-V input synchronous buck converter delivers up to 20 mA of continuous output current, suiting it for automotive and industrial control-loop applications.

The LTC3632 is a 4.5- to 50-V input synchronous buck converter that delivers up to 20 mA of continuous output current. It is protected up to 60 V, making it well-suited for automotive and industrial 4- to 20-mA control-loop applications. The device’s internal synchronous rectification and programmable peak current mode deliver efficiencies of up to 93% in lower-current applications. Output voltage is adjustable down to 0.8 V. Using internal high-side and synchronous power switches, the device draws only 12 µA at no load while maintaining output-voltage regulation, making it suitable for always-on battery-powered applications. Because of its inherent stability, the LTC3632 requires no external compensation. This combines with the 3- by 3-mm DFN package to create a compact solution. Prices for the LTC3632EDD and LTC3632EMS8E start at $2.45 each. The LTC3632IDD and LTC3632IMS8E, which are tested to operate from -40°C to 125°C operating junction temperature, cost $2.82 each. Prices are for quantities of 1000. All versions are available from stock. LINEAR TECHNOLOGY CORP., Milpitas, CA. (408) 432-1900.
