Dual Half-Bridge Motor Driver Designed for Unidirectional Drive

May 2, 2013
Dual half bridge motor driver IC designed for unidirectional drive of two dc motors in low voltage battery operated applications.

Allegro’s A3910 dual half bridge motor driver IC is designed for unidirectional drive of two dc motors in low cost, low voltage battery operated applications. Offering features such as Thermal Shut-down and sleep functionality in a small package, keeps the driver competitive with equivalent discrete circuits. Targeted at the consumer market, end applications include game controllers and home entertainment systems featuring haptic feedback. The driver’s outputs are rated for operation up to 500 mA and the motor can be connected to either supply or GND. Direct control of high and low side drivers is implemented to allow either high side or low side PWM. Using a MOS switch results in improved braking action for the motor, compared to implementation with simple clamp diode. The IC can also be used to drive a single bidirectional dc motor. The A3910EEETR-T motor driver is supplied in a 2×2 mm, 8-lead DFN package with exposed thermal pad (suffix EE). It is lead (Pb) free, with 100% matte-tin leadframe plating and is priced at $0.26 each/1,000.
