Li+ Chargers Keep Over Voltages In Check

March 7, 2005
The MAX8600 single-input and MAX8601 dual-input linear battery chargers for single-cell lithium-ion (Li+) batteries provide up to 14V of over-voltage protection at the ac-adapter and USB inputs. The MAX8600 provides up to 1A of programmable charge

The MAX8600 single-input and MAX8601 dual-input linear battery chargers for single-cell lithium-ion (Li+) batteries provide up to 14V of over-voltage protection at the ac-adapter and USB inputs. The MAX8600 provides up to 1A of programmable charge current from an ac adaptor while the MAX8601 automatically selects either a USB port or ac-adaptor input. Both devices employ a control algorithm that includes low-battery precharging, voltage- and current-limited fast charging, and top-off charging. The devices continuously monitor the battery for over-voltage, over-/under-temperature, and charging time. Charger timeout protection is programmable and charger status is indicated by three open-drain outputs. Available in TQFN packages measuring 3 mm x 3 mm, prices start at $1.25 each/1,000.
