The chip is well-suited for the design of green switching power supplies in systems such as PCs, workstations, and servers. It works with a wide range of power line input voltages, making it possible to design universal power supplies that automatically adapt to power outlets globally, eliminating the need for power line adapters, and switches. The chip is pin-compatible with the ML4841 and includes a sophisticated PFC circuit.
