The new MAAPSS0004 and MAAPSS0005 are a pair of compact, low-cost IC power amplifiers for use in cellular GSM and DCS GPRS wireless handsets. The RF power amps meet GPRS specs and are claimed as the first such type of devices to include all 50 ohm input and output matching in a compact 5 mm x 5 mm plastic micro lead-frame package. Both of these power amplifiers do not require external matching circuits. The devices feature a power-down mode to conserve battery power when the handset is not transmitting or receiving. The three-stages of power amplification operate from a single 3V to 3.5V supply. The MAAPSS0004 provides an output power of 35.5 dBm at 50% efficiency and the MAAPSS0005 delivers an output power of 34 dBm at 45% efficiency. The devices are designed as small, easy-to-use, high-performance replacements for popular hybrid modules found in GSM handsets. Pricing is reported as being less than $1.99 each/100,000.
