Secure Battery Supervisor Integrates Tamper Detection

Meeting payment-card industry PIN entry device (PCI-PED) requirements, the DS3650 SPI-compatible battery-backup controller integrates two tamper-detection comparator inputs to interface with and provide continuous monitoring of resistive anti-tamper meshes, external sensors, and digital interlocks. Other features include a battery-backup controller, power monitor, CPU supervisor, and a temperature sensor. The device constantly monitors primary power and, in the event of failure, automatically switches to an external battery. It also monitors battery voltage, initiating a tamper response when voltage level becomes abnormal. For recovery analysis after a tamper event, an elapsed-time counter freezes the value of a free-running 32-bit counter. Inscribed with a unique four-bit serial number, the DS3650 is available in a lead-free, 16-ball, 4 mm x 4 mm CSBGA with an operating-temperature range from -40°C to +85.
