Step-down Controller Maximizes 12V Adapter Design Flexibility

Using external MOSFETs to support both synchronous and non-synchronous designs, the AAT1185 single-output step-down controller provides power conversion for lower-cost 12V adapters. By supporting synchronous and non-synchronous operation, the device allows designers to develop solutions for diverse applications including wireless LANs, DSL and cable modems, notebook computers, and set-top boxes. The controller supports a 6V to 24V input range and output voltage is adjustable from 0.8 to 5.5V. Output current ranges from less than 1A up to 10A. Other features include high- and low-side pins to drive the external MOSFETs, a constant frequency voltage mode control, 490-kHz switching frequency, a shutdown current of less than 30 µA, soft start, and programmable over-current and over-temperature protection circuits. Available in a lead-free, 14-pin TSOPJW package, price is $0.79 each/1,000. ANALOGIC TECHNOLOGIES INC., Sunnyvale, CA. (408) 737-4600.
