Enlarging the 73S12xx family of dedicated controller ICs for smart card readers are the 72S1217F 8-bit PINpad smart card reader SoC, and the 73S1209F and 73S1210F turnkey smart card readers. The 73S1217F is a single-chip PINpad smart card reader providing both USB and serial connectivity. It features 64K of flash memory, a dc/dc converter, and several power-management functions. In USB applications, the device enables operation from a single supply that can be either USB power or batteries. In off mode, the circuit typically draws less than 1 µA. The 73S1209F and 73S1210F are self-contained readers suited for set-top-box, WiMax smart phones and home gateway, payphone, POS terminal, vending machine, and residential-meter applications. Built on an 80515 CPU core, they can run either the company's turnkey firmware or user-specific code.
