The show, which has been growing each year, is more relevant than ever. While microwave radio was once relegated to the radar, electronic warfare, long distance telephone relay, and satellites fields, today microwave is mainstream wireless.
Design Automation Conference (DAC)
Last week's 45th Design Automation Conference (DAC) in Anaheim was my twelfth consecutive DAC, and it was surely the most interesting and different I've experienced in journalistic terms. Yeah, that was me traipsing around the show floor with my colleague Damian Mendez in tow, toting a great big video camera. It was my first experience in documenting DAC in video, and I would term it a success.
Medical Design and Manufacturing East
One would be hard pressed to dispute that Medical Design & Manufacturing East is the world's largest conference and exhibition for medical manufacturing and related products. Taking up nearly one third of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, the event featured over 1,000 exhibitors from every area of the healthcare market.
PCIM Europe
Paul Whytock and the Electronic Design Europe team where at the PCIM power electronics exhibition and conference in Nuremberg, Germany, talking to companies and filming some of the hot technologies being unveiled at the show. This event attracted around 250 companies from the power electronics sector and the technologies on show included, power semiconductor and power management products, thermal management, power supplies, DSPs, microprocessors; in fact pretty much all the electronics relating to the accurate and efficient use of power.
Society for Information Display (SID)

International Electronics Forum (IEF)
The 17th annual International Electronics Forum, held in Dubai, UAE, opened with a brief introduction and welcome by Malcolm Penn, Chairman and CEO of Future Horizons (www.futurehorizons.com). He began by thanking the Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA) and H.H Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of DSOA, for their Forum support and sponsorship (for more on DSO, take a look at the videos we have on this site).
ESC 2008
The Embedded Systems Conference is coming up soon and it looks to be even better than last year—despite the downturn in the economy. Not even flagging home sales could deter the number of announcements and new products. I’ll be covering a lot more from the show, but here are a number of items that have been made available ahead of time. Also, check out Developers Refine Their Embedded Wares For ESC for more pre-ESC content.
CTIA 2008
f you are looking for a way to learn all the latest cell phone technologies and find out who is doing what in this dynamic field, the CTIA conference in Las Vegas April 1–3 is your best bet. While the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona is the largest cell phone show in the world, CTIA is the largest in the U.S. and is expected to have 40,000-plus attendees and over 1200 exhibitors. This is the larger show of the two CTIA puts on each year. If you want to immerse yourself in the cell phone business for a couple of days this is the place to be.
DesignCon 2008
DesignCon 2008 attracted engineering professionals from various levels and disciplines representing many aspects of electronic design: applications engineering, architecture and systems design, ASIC design, circuit-board design, embedded-systems design, hardware/software integration, high-performance systems, IC design, packaging, semiconductor product management, service and support, SoC design, software development, testing and debugging, and more.
Embedded World 2008
The Electronic Design Europe team will be reporting again from Embedded World 2008 in Nuremberg. Our coverage will include video interviews with technologists exhibiting and demonstrating some of the most cutting-edge embedded electronic developments.
APEC 2008
IEEE’s APEC is the power industry’s premier tradeshow and convention. This year’s event, held in Austin, Texas from Feb. 24 to Feb. 28, was no exception. (APEC 2009 will be in Washington, D.C.) As a trade-press editor, I go to APEC to track trends and to learn about the dozens of new devices and ICs introduced there. Here’s a look at what I took away from the sessions and the tradeshow floor.
Mobile World Congress 2008
The Mobile World Congress put on by the GSM Association is where those in the cell phone business come together each year here in Barcelona. All the various players are here—buyers and sellers from carriers to basestation vendors, handset manufacturers, chip companies, software companies and anything in between. It is a real show, one of the largest in the world.
Power Electronics Technology 2007
Through its professional advancement courses, seminars, and technical sessions, the PET Conference equips power electronics engineers with practical instructions and advanced information on the latest power component technologies and system design techniques. The conference delivers a wealth of information on a host of new and emerging applications and technology topics in the power electronics field. Best of all, it gives design engineers an invaluable opportunity to discuss their design engineering issues and challenges with leading experts in all areas of the power electronics field through the PACs, conference seminars, general sessions, networking receptions, "Birds of a Feather" brainstorming... and more!

More than half will of those be from countries other than Germany—it is truly international.
APEC 2007
The Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC), held February 25 to March 1, 2007 in Anaheim, Calif., saw a number of innovations in the power industry. Electronic Design Analog/Power Editor Don Tuite reports from the conference, where two of the most significant trends were revealed: the extension of PMBus from, a mere chip-to-chip protocol to something that allows interaction for diagnostics and control between server software and the power supplies that make server blades work, and hardware availability for DrMOS power-regulator modules that will power for all future PCs and laptops with Intel chips.
Embedded Systems Conference 2007
Don't expect the same old stuff at the 2007 Embedded Systems Conference, scheduled for April 1-5 at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, Calif. This year's show will be virtually bursting at the seams, with many vendors setting up shop outside the main exhibit hall. Vendors seem to be cautiously optimistic, now that issues like the European Union's Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) are being addressed and the latest standards-based technologies like Serial ATA (SATA) and PCI Express are commonplace. In fact, this optimism has triggered the return of numerous exhibitors and attracted a host of new vendors.
