Suite Helps Designers Test Cable Modem Termination Systems
The Cable Modem Automated Test Suite (CMATS) includes a variety of tests, such as upstream and downstream throughput, back-to-back, jitter, and rate limit. These tests let engineers take advantage of the DHCP protocol in assigning IP addresses to cable modems. Also, this suite boasts a scalable design, high port density, flexible configuration, and an easy to use IxExplorer GUI. Together, these features provide high-speed traffic generation and analysis for testing and validating the performance characteristics of the cable modem (CM) and cable modem termination systems (CMTS) under simulated, real-world conditions.

The CMATS costs $3000.

Vector Network Analyzers Increase Speed And Improve Ease Of Use
According to its manufacturer, the PNA series of vector network analyzers combines the industry's fastest measurement speed, lowest noise, and greatest dynamic range with comprehensive automation and connectivity for superior measurement performance. These analyzers incorporate Windows 2000 to link the measurement and PC environments for maximum automation and integration. Their sweep speeds are between six and 35 times faster than the previous model, the 8753ES. Also, they sport wider dynamic range, low trace noise, four measurement receivers with direct access, and 9-GHz coverage.

The 3-GHz E8356A costs $43,000, the 6-GHz E8357A costs $49,000, and the 9-GHz E8358A costs $55,000.

Power-Supply Test Environment Increases Productivity By 50%
The PowerStar 5 Windows-based power-supply test environment uses a series of programming and calculation techniques to reduce test times. Its flexible programming environment lets designers develop test programs and control equipment. Designers also can use its fill-in-the-blanks test sequence development, drag-and-drop programming, and library of over 100 standard ready-to-use tests to rapidly create complete functional test programs.

Programming techniques unique to this edition of PowerStar minimize the time required to carry out the test. They eliminate measurement duplication and reduce settling times to their theoretical limit. According to the company, these features reduce test time by 50% or more. Also, its ATE software lets users set up a sequence of tests that are saved and executed when required. The software then implements each test in turn.

PowerStar 5 costs about $5500. Delivery takes three to five weeks.

Protocol Testers Use A Variety Of Protocol Analysis Applications
The WWG 8630 portable protocol tester simulates network elements and analyzes fixed and mobile networks. The WWG 8631 PC-card-based analyzer (PCMCIA) provides fast, on-site use. Both communications protocol testers use the same protocol analysis applications, covering SS7, ISDN, V.5x, GSM, GPRS, and others. They also generate comparable results. Other instruments' formats are supported as well, so users can evaluate results from them, too.
