At 170 mW, the power dissipation of the SPT7938 CMOS 12-bit, 40-MSPS A/D converter is claimed to be a whopping 50% to 60% lower than any competitive device on the market. In addition, at $11.50 each/1000, the ADC's price is reportedly almost 50% less than its competitors.
The SPT7938 ADC is said to be particularly well suited for use in applications requiring at least 10 effective number of bits (ENOB) performance, as well as low power consumption and price. The applications range from digital cameras and medical imaging products to wireless networks and professional video equipment.
Other SPT7938 features include on-chip track-and-hold circuitry that is said to assure good dynamic performance without using external components. The ADC operates from a 5V supply, has selectable 3- or 5-V logic I/O, can be used over a -40°C to 85°C temperature range, and comes in a 28-lead SSOP. Samples and production quantities are now available.
