The company unveils what it is calling a ground breaking embedded optical engine technology that will enable high-speed connectivity in a wide range of electronic computing and consumer applications. The first application to take advantage of the embedded optical engine technology is Intel’s Light Peak, an optical fiber cable technology for running multiple existing I/O protocols on a single cable. It delivers a bandwidth starting at 10 Gb/s with the potential to scale to 100 Gb/s over the next decade. At 10 Gb/s, users can transfer a full-length Blu-Ray movie in less than 30s. Basic features of the engine include a 2-mm profile and a power consumption of 135 mW per 10G channel. For more details, call AVAGO TECHNOLOGIES, San Jose, CA. (800) 235-0312.
