3U OpenVPX SBC Integrates Octal-Core Power Architecture

Aug. 20, 2013
The VPX3-131 OpenVPX single-board computer (SBC) combines Freescale’s QorIQ 4-core, 8-core, or dual 64-bit processors with a set of I/O to create a high-level processing solution for SWaP-constrained environments.

The VPX3-131 OpenVPX single-board computer (SBC) combines Freescale’s QorIQ 4-core, 8-core, or dual 64-bit processors with a set of I/O to create a high-level processing solution for SWaP-constrained environments. Developed by Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions, the SBC can be configured with the octal-core QorIQ P4080 (eight E500MC 32-bit cores at 1.2 GHz), dual-core QorIQ P5020/5010 (two/one 1.5-GHz E5500 64-bit cores), or quad-core QorIQ P3041 Power Architecture processor (four E500MC 32-bit cores at 1.5 GHz). The 3U-sized VPX3-131 comes in either air- or conduction-cooled variants. A high-speed backplane and XMC mezzanine module connectivity support multi-gigabyte/second data flows from board to board, both through the SBC’s backplane interface and from the backplane to its XMC site. High-speed bandwidth processing handles the acquisition, processing, and distribution of sensor data required by demanding defense and aerospace applications (e.g., video, radar, sonar). The board also can be used as a mission computer, display computer, or in SIGINT and motor-control applications.
