  • The fiber-optic build-out continues with Charter Communications' award of a $2 million contract to International FiberCom's subsidiary, All Star Telecom. The 12-month project, which has already begun, will upgrade and install a portion of the Charter cable network in the San Luis Obispo, Calif. area. Charter will use the expanded vehicle to deliver traditional and digital TV, high-speed Internet access, and paging services.

  • Network system-on-a-chip (SoC) provider RealChip Inc. has licensed Infineon Technologies' CARMEL DSP core for high-speed Internet infrastructure applications. RealChip is building a library of third-party IPs and creating preconfigured building blocks known as Reality Objects that can plug and play into its SoC solutions.

  • To expand its infrastructure product line, Stanford Microdevices has formed a strategic alliance with UltraRF. Under this agreement, UltraRF will provide Stanford with foundry service, enabling it to manufacture and supply a wide range of LDMOS RF power devices for wireless infrastructure equipment.

  • Commercial off-the-shelf supplier DY 4 Systems Inc. has partnered with software developer AMIRIX Systems Inc. to extend open-source Linux technology to military and aerospace uses. The initial focus is on DY 4's PowerPC single-board computers.

  • Information Handling Services Group (IHS), a business information solution provider, has teamed with the British Standards Institution (BSI). Their new company, British Standards Publishing Ltd. (BSPL), is now the sole worldwide content provider of BSI's standards to engineers, designers, and technical professionals. BSPL will concentrate on the worldwide distribution of British standards through the Internet, CD-ROM, and hard copy.

  • Critical Path Technologies (CPT), which produces quick-turn high-technology electronic assemblies and systems, has acquired Axiom Electronics Inc., a manufacturer of complex multilayer printed-circuit assemblies. This move should enhance CPT's complex multilayer circuit-board assembly.

  • Intel has invested in Ovonyx Inc., which is developing phase-change semiconductor memory devices known as Ovonic Unified Memory (OUM). This technology promises to enable significantly faster write and erase speeds and higher cycling endurance than conventional memory types. Intel hopes to leverage this development to take silicon devices beyond perceived scaling limits.

  • Schlumberger Test & Transactions has acquired a startup known as Telweb Inc., which provides Internet accessibility through its WebPayphone Network. Currently, the network is being deployed at a number of airports worldwide. Combining this capability with Schlumberger's information security and smart-card technology, business travelers and daily commuters will be guaranteed quick and easy access to public Internet portals where they can conduct secure transactions and communication without a PC.

  • Cadence Design Systems Inc. and Sun Microsystems Inc. will jointly develop a commercial high-frequency pc-board design solution to address today's power delivery issues. This effort will make leading-edge solutions for power design available to a large number of designers. To date, no complete solution for power analysis has been made available as a commercial electronic design automation (EDA) tool. The solution is based on Sun Microsystem's power plane technology for developing and analyzing the combined power plane and decoupling structures. It will ultimately be offered as an option to Cadence's SPECCTRAQuest series of high-speed board design and analysis solutions.

  • Sprint PCS, a wireless phone service provider, has teamed with enrev Corp., a developer of battery technology. Together, they will promote the use of enrev's Battery Operating System (BOS) in Sprint's wireless systems. According to the companies, the BOS reduces charge time by half, increases per-charge talk time by up to 20%, and extends battery life by up to 200%.
