Development Kit Aids Designers With IEEE 1588 Time Protocol

May 7, 2007
Imsys Technologies has announced the SNAP 1588 Development Kit for supporting the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol.

The SNAP 1588 Development Kit from Imsys Technologies helps users create Ethernet-based, time-sensitive applications such as industrial controls, telecommunication systems, and test and measurement systems that require precise time synchronization. The kit supports the IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol. Included is the Imsys Developer, an advanced PC software tool for program development for Imsys CPU platforms. The Windows environment enables source debugging in Java, C, or Assembler. The package comes with drivers and an API for providing a high-resolution time pulse or frequency derived from the 1588 packet information. For high-level control of the precision time engine, users can select the Precise Time Protocol Engine.

The kit comes with the SNAP module, a commercially proven interface supported by many host-board manufacturers. SNAP includes 10/100-Mbit/s full-duplex Ethernet, three RS-232 serial ports, two 1-Wire interfaces, general-purpose I/O ports, high-speed I²C, SPI, and CAN. Also, included is the Systronix TILT400 Pro socket board, which supports the SNAP module’s interface options.

IEEE 1588-2002 is a part of the LXI Consortium, Ethernet Powerlink, and Ethernet/IP standards. Revision 2, which is expected later this year, will provide many enhancements, including a sub-microsecond accuracy, which will satisfy the requirements of the telecom industry for use in basestations, including femtocells.

The SNAP 1588 Development Kit hardware platform is shipping now. Imsys is working with Zurich University of Applied Science on implementation of the protocol stack, which is expected to be available this month.
