Promoted as a low-cost DSP for high-performance applications, the TMS320C6412 provides users with a range of peripherals, including an Ethernet MAC, PCI port, host port interface, and 288 KB of SRAM. Available in 500- and 600-MHz versions, the device provides 64 general-purpose, 32-bit registers. In addition, eight parallel functional units can compute four 16-bit multiply accumulates (MACs) per clock cycle. For the 500-MHz device, this translates to 2,000 MMACs per second. In terms of development support, the TMS320C6416 DSP starter kit contains a development board with 512 KB of flash memory, 16 MB of SDRAM, Code Composer Studio Integrated Development Environment, and a USB cable. The TMS320C6412 is currently sampling in both 500- and 600-MHz clock speeds, with production scheduled for the second quarter of 2004. Both devices are code compatible with other C6000 DSPs. Pricing for a 500-MHz device starts at $39.95 each/10,000. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INC., Dallas, TX. (800) 477-8924.
