Designed in an extremely small size, the RM series of multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) comes in a 0201 case size, making them particularly attractive for use where board real estate is extremely tight, such as in cell phones and around ICs of increasingly higher pin counts. The new MLCCs are currently available in production quantities for both Class 1 temperature compensating and Class 2 high capacitance parts. Class 1 parts are available as members of the E12 series rated from 0.5 to 100 pF; Class 2 X5R parts are available in the E6 series rated from 100 pF to 1,000 pF; and Class 2 Y5V parts are available in the E3 series from 22,000 to 100,000 pF. The Class 2 RM series capacitors employ base metal (nickel) internal and external electrodes and have higher breakdown voltages. The RM series’ lower ESR and ESL minimize impedence at higher frequencies and reduce power loss and heat generation. Pricing for 0201 case size MLCCs starts at $0.015 each/OEM quantities.
