Said to boost CPU utilization up to 15 times when compared to traditional plug-in serial interfaces, the NI PCI-8430/8 and PCI-8431/8 serial boards also report improvements in speed, reliability, and performance over native desktop serial ports. The boards provide simultaneous communication on up to eight RS232, RS485, or RS422 ports at speeds up to 2 Mb/s with little or no effect on the CPU. They also offer flexible baud rates to achieve between 57 bits/s and 2 Mb/s for non-standard rates and to within 1% and 0.01% accuracy for standard rates. Both come with NI-Serial driver software that works with any of the company’s development environments, including LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, and Measurement Studio for Visual Studio .NET. Prices start at $695. For more details, contact Ernest Martinez at NATIONAL INSTRUMENTS, Austin, TX. (800) 258-7022.
