Providing cost-effective remote control, the USB2232 controller integrates a USB-to-infrared interface and a 15-in-1 flash media card reader, plus a consumer infrared (CIR) controller. The device uses a single USB connection and the standardized human interface device (HID) interface in enabling its CIR functionality, which is said to greatly reduce software complexity. Other features include high-speed or full-speed USB data transfer rates, simultaneous operation of consumer IR and flash card access (CF/ATA, SM/xD/Nand, SD, MS/MS-Pro), power FETs with short-circuit protection, and a 1.8V regulator for low-power operation. Pricing is $5.80 each/10,000. SMSC, Hauppauge, NY. (631) 435-6000.
