Rotary-Position Sensor Is Completely Non-Contacting

Oct. 8, 2008
Cherry Corp.'s AN9 series dual-output rotary-position sensor, which is electrically and physically non-contacting, offers high reliability for sensing systems in tough automotive and off-road environments.

The AN9 series dual-output rotary-position sensor is electrically and physically non-contacting, making it well-suited for applications in which high reliability and uncertain physical tolerances are involved. The dual-output design also improves reliability, allowing a connected controller to diagnose potential problems in the sensing system. The sensor’s output is programmable, but it is available is standard output ranges from 0 to 45° to 0 to 360°. Designed for automotive and off-road environments, the sensor is sealed to IP68 standards for resistance to water immersion. The unique design uses a rotating member that mates to a separate magnetic actuator. This means that mis-alignment or changes in the shaft position will not physically affect the sensor. The Hall-effect-based device offers a 5-V dc ratiometric output. Suitable applications include steering wheel position sensors, shift-by-wire sensors, variable valve-timing position sensors, and pedal position sensors for braking and acceleration.
