Adding to the SH-Mobile series application processors for mobile applications, the SH7366 offers approximately a 30% power saving for video playback applications compared with previous versions. It achieves 30 fps encoding and decoding performance with a D1-size display (720 × 480 pixels). To simplify designs and reduce overall system cost, the processor provides more peripheral functions including a USB 2.0 interface and a d/a converter for TV output. Available in an 8 mm x 10 mm, 284-pin BGA package, the device also includes a microprocessor and system memory. Of particular note, its on-chip video processing unit supports the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) moving-image compression standard found in mobile digital TV systems worldwide. The VPU also can handle other moving-image applications such as video e-mail, videophone pictures, and camcorder-style video clips. Additionally, there is a built-in LCD controller that supports TFT color panels. RENESAS TECHNOLOGY AMERICA INC., San Jose, CA. (408) 382-7407.
