Aiming to lower volume production costs for rear-projection TV makers while upping resolution, the DD1080 liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS), single-panel display measures 1.15" diagonal and delivers a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080. The panel maintains the same dimensions as the existing DD720 LCOS panel, allowing OEMs to use current 1,280 x 720 line-projector designs for 1,920 x 1,080 units with little reconfiguration. According to the company, single-panel LCOS technology eliminates the need for three panels, one for each color (RGB), thereby reducing TV weight, cost, and typical convergence problems. In addition to high resolution, the panel exhibits a response time of 0.9 ms, high contrast ratio, 2 Mpixel count and a 540 Hz color-field rate, and includes standard definition signals. Samples are available now with volume production scheduled for early 2004.
