Designed for use in flat-panel displays, MicroLens light extraction technology is said to deliver the most efficient LED-based edge lighting to date. The components, combining molded-in optics, high brightness LEDs, thin construction, and a scalable design, illuminate LCDs ranging in size from less than 1" to greater than 50" diagonal. According to the company, MicroLens edge lights provide exceptional output and uniformity and can be used with a wide range of LED light sources including RGB and white phosphor LEDs. A proprietary transition area and lens arrays spread light uniformly, reducing the number of LEDs required. The components provide up to 180,000 unique optical features per square inch and are scalable to large displays in a thin form factor. They are currently being developed in sizes under 0.5-mm thick. Depending on application, size, and volume, single-LED edge lights are available for less than $1 each. For more details, contact David DeAgazio at GLOBAL LIGHTING TECHNOLOGIES INC., Brecksville, OH.
