Groomed for harsh automotive and industrial applications, the AS5140H magnetic rotary encoder IC is fully qualified to AEC-Q100 for operation in ambient temperatures up to 150°C. With a resolution of 0.35°, the encoder recognizes 1,024 positions within one 360° turn, accessible with either a serial or a PWM interface. It provides three programmable incremental outputs, one of which delivers a 3-phase commutation signal for brushless dc motors. Other features include user-specific zero programming and a diagnostic function for correct positioning of the magnet or the ability to recognize interruptions to the power supply, and a daisy chain mode that allows position data to be read over a 2-wire bus. An integrated voltage regulator allows the device to operate at either 3.3V or 5V. Offered in a lead-free SSOP-16 package, samples are available now. AUSTRIAMICROSYSTEMS USA INC., Raleigh, NC.
