On a single chip, the uPD720150 integrates a USB 2.0 host and a peripheral controller, functions that usually require separate USB host and peripheral controller chips. The controller executes data transfers at rates up to 480 Mb/s and supports software development via basic USB functions implemented in hardware. It also provides a general-purpose CPU bus interface for connection to a variety of embedded CPUs. Via the host and peripheral control functions, register settings enable four different configurations for the two USB ports: one host, two hosts, one peripheral, or one host and one peripheral. The chip supports simultaneous host and peripheral control and users can increase the number of ports by connecting an external hub. The uPD720150 is available now in sample quantities with volume production commencing in August. NEC ELECTRONICS AMERICA INC., Santa Clara, CA. (800) 366-9782.
