Reference Designs Ease Use Of FPGA In System Management

Dec. 11, 2006
Actel's reference designs and System Management Development Kit simplify creation of a one-chip system management solution using the Fusion PSC FPGA.

Reference designs for system management functions using the MicroTCA architecture in electronic equipment are now available from Actel Corp. The free, tested reference designs will drive MicroTCA adoption and provide templates for the customization of system management functions, according to the company. To support system management applications like MicroTCA, Actel offers intellectual property (IP) cores for processing, analog, and memory interface communications.

To speed development time, Actel also offers the System Management Development Kit. Equipped with a Fusion Programmable System Chip (PSC), this complete prototyping and development kit includes a set of key demonstrations, including power-up detection, power sequencing, system diagnostics, and remote communications. The Fusion PSC is a mixed-signal field-programmable gate array (FPGA) that can integrate all the functions needed for system management — including power and thermal management, data logging, and system diagnostics — into one chip. As a result, implementations using the Fusion PSC can be 50% or more smaller than circuits using discrete components.
