Hi,
One of the fun aspects of being an editor for Electronic Design is wandering around in the library of over a million articles that have been archived over the years to find timeless, or historical, articles that I think our readers might find interesting - at least I find them so.
Problem is, there were acquisitions and ports of different content management systems by the IT folks, and figures (primarily) and entire site URLs disappeared as a result.
At times, the editors can reconstruct some of these, but we have a gap of the entire 1990s through about 2013 that we don't have hard copies to be able to do the reconstruction with (if you're "decluttering" and have boxes of old issues you plan to toss (including the ones we allegedly have), please email me to let me know what you have and I'll pay postage/freight to give them a good home that can benefit everyone, worldwide, for-almost-ever, if we can establish a full archive as a group effort).
Back in the late twenty-oughts, Penton, the prior owners of Electronic Design, set up a site, engineeringTV.com [fake hotlink] from which they hosted video content from the editors of Electronic Design and Machine Design. You'll see a young Bill Wong in them, and our long-in-the-tooth readers will recognize Don Tuite, Lee Teschler (of Machine Design), and others.
But --- type the URL in and you'll get a redirect to ED's home page. Ugh - it all got vaporized for some reason after the big boss wrote a check to buy the particular site (there are three victim-properties that I know of so far). Let's all eye-roll in sync and wobble the planet for a sec.
Fortunately, some, not all, of it has survived. So, as "new guy", I'm going to try picking out a couple of interesting videos for you to watch each month and I'll post them as they come up and then bolt them into this newsletter, bi-monthly, so you don't miss any of the series that I'm calling, "eTV Reruns." It's currently an experiment and one of those easier-to-ask-forgiveness things.
As usual, please feel free to comment on the eTV Reruns pages as they come up. It's a new thing, so if you want to suggest tuning, chat about the content, or find something irritating, go ahead and type away there.
One other thing...I can't index within any writeup that refers to a video's timestamp without sending you off to YouTube each time, so you'll need to use the slider in the ED page's video to get to that time index.
Sorry about that one. It's those IT guys...AGAIN, lol.
enjoy,
-andyT
