Featuring efficiency of 97%, the MAX8815A 1-A step-up converter also boasts a low quiescent current (30 µA) and a low-noise, forced PWM mode. The boost converter delivers an adjustable (3.3 V to 5 V) or preset (5 V) output from a 1.2-V to 5.5-V input provided by two NiMH/NiCd AA batteries or one Li+ battery. When the output is set to 5 V with the feedback pin grounded, the MAX8815A requires only three external components to provide up to 1 A. For further space savings, it integrates a True Shutdown load-disconnect switch and internal compensation. Protection functions include output-overload and short-circuit protection, inrush-current limiting in soft-start, and thermal shutdown. The MAX8815A comes in a 3-mm by 3-mm, 10-pin TDFN package, and is fully specified over the –40°C to 85°C extended industrial temperature range. Pricing starts at $1.14 each/1,000. An evaluation kit is available to speed designs and time to market. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (408) 737-7600.
