Operating from regulated or un-regulated input voltages, the LTC1980 switching regulator combines battery charging and power supply functions and automatically performs step-up or step-down dc/dc conversions. The 24-lead SSOP charges both single- and dual-cell Li-ion batteries, as well as NiCd, NiMH and lead-acid batteries. A power path function supports simultaneous battery charging and voltage regulation, and a current-mode flyback topology is said to provide high efficiencies and fast transient response times, as well as simplifying designs. Optional burst and power-down modes allow users to tailor power density, efficiency and output ripple to their specific applications. Price is $3.75 each/1,000. LINEAR TECHNOLOGY CORP., Milpitas, CA.
