The DRV2605 haptic driver from TI seeks to ease the process of adding realistic tactile feedback effects to consumer and industrial products, such as smartphones, tablets, ebooks, refrigerators, microwave ovens and washing machines. The driver is the first eccentric rotating mass actuator and linear resonant actuator haptic driver pre-loaded with a library of 123 distinct haptic effects designed and licensed by Immersion, the developer and licensor of touch feedback technology. The driver also features a smart loop architecture that claims to reduce startup and braking time by half, deliver twice the vibration strength, and consume 50% less power. Automatically converting audio from music, movies or games into haptic effects, audio mode adds a vibrating bass enhancement that allows users to fully experience audio and video content. The automatic actuator diagnostics and level tracking feature delivers consistent acceleration over a range of environmental conditions. The DRV2605 is available now in a 9-ball, 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.6 mm WCSP package for $1.60 each/1,000. Also available for $1.15 each/1,000 is the DRV2604 haptic driver, which shares the same core and performance features, minus the audio-to-haptics mode and haptic effects library.
